Evolution of colouration as social signals
Many coral reef fishes display remarkable vivid colours with distinctive patterns. Our research aims to investigate how these visual traits are utilised within social groups, as signals of status or individual identity, to reduce conflict and maintain cooperation. Our approach includes both laboratory and field work, carrying out behavioural and developmental experiments, and comparing colouration and social behaviour across species. This integrative approach will shed light on the evolution and significance of colouration in coral reef fish social groups.
